Worm farms

     Hi!
Today we are going to explain how to create your own fertilizer/compost.  This type of fertlizer/compost is from a worm farm!
Here is how to create your worm farm:

  1. Decide what you are going to use as a home for your worm farm. Two wooden containers with one lid to go on the very top are a perfect choice. Put one container on the ground in a spot that isn’t too hot or cold. Under a shady tree that loses its leaves in winter would be awesome.
  2. Poke some holes (to let the water out) in the base of the second container and sit it on top of the first one. The moisture (worm wee) will drain through the top container into the bottom one.
  3. Put a 10cm-thick layer of ripped paper mixed with compost on the base of the top container.
  4. Water it gently, so that it’s just moist.
  5. Buy your worms. You can’t use earthworms you just pick out of the soil for this job. You need some of the compost worms you buy from the garden store.
  6. Put the worms into their new home in the top container  and place the lid on top. If you don’t have a lid, cover the worms with an old towel or some carpet or hessian.
  7. Once they’re settled in after a day or two, you can start feeding your worms. What to feed worms: vegetable and fruit scraps, tea bags (no strings), coffee grounds and soft leaves. To help your little buddies eat their food, cut it up into small chunks for them.  DO NOT feed them: meat, bones, fat, dairy foods or any plants that have been treated with chemicals.
  8. Only feed the worms once they have devoured the last lot of food you gave them!
The liquid (worm wee) that collects in the base can be weakened by adding water so that it ends up the colour of weak tea. Then pour it onto plants every two or three weeks. It’s a totally organic fertilizer, which can be used to feed every plant in the garden.

Compost

Compost is a great way to fertilize your garden and make the plants grow faster. Here are some steps on how to make your compost:

1. Decide on where you are going to compost(large wood frame, plastic tube etc)

2. Fill your spot with organic matter such as food scraps (no citrus or meat),grass clipping, saw dust, hedge clippings etc.

3. Turn over your compost every few weeks to keep it aerated.

4. Every so often add some blood and bone and lime fertilizer to help it break down.

Wait until your compost has broken down before you put it on your garden so that it does not sprout weeds!

How to grow a vege garden.

How to grow a garden.

What you will need..

1. A wooden box or an old tire to plant your garden in.

2.  Liquid Fertilizer

3. A watering can/hose

4. Seedlings

5. Compost

6. Dirt/soil

7. Shovel

8. Hoe

Firstly prepare the soil by weeding it and putting fertilizer in it. Next you will need to put the soil in your base (tire/ wooden box).

Next plant your seeds. Space them out according to the instructions on the seed packet. You can plant seeds from spring time, depending on what vegetable it is. Potatoes you need to plant in Spring so they’ll be ready for Christmas. You plant most other vegetable at Spring time also. Brussels sprouts and broccoli would be best planted in Autumn.

 Looking after your garden

To start looking after your garden you need to water your garden for 7 to 15 minutes a week, more than this in the heat of Summer and Autumn.

Compost

To make good compost for your garden you need a container (large ones) and things like food scraps, grass clippings but don't put citrus fruits like orange peels, or bones in this. Also  you might want to put worms in the container so the food can decompose faster and don't forget take the worms out of the compost before you put it on your garden! Put scraps in every 1 or 2 weeks.

Weeding
Weed your garden every 2 weeks, but before you weed your garden learn the difference between seedlings and weeds!
